Itinerary

Day 1Welcome to Oaxaca

Once you have your luggage, your personal driver will be eagerly awaiting to whisk you to the Quinta Real Oaxaca.

Your intelli.tours Intelligence Officer will be at the hotel to greet you and assist you with your check-in as you enjoy a complimentary Oaxacan cocktail to start your visit in style.

Depending on when you arrive, your room may or may not be ready, so we invite you to enjoy breakfast and/or lunch in the hotel on us.

Enjoy the afternoon to get settled into your amazing room in this spectacularly renovated 16th-century former convent, exploring the building and its amazing courtyards and original frescoes.

This first evening we’ll have a welcome dinner gala at the hotel, where you’ll meet all intelli.tours staff, restaurateurs, and tourism specialists who will be ensuring that you have the journey of a lifetime in Oaxaca, Mexico.

Day 2Monte Alban, Market, and Discovery Walk

Today, after a delicious buffet breakfast, you’ll enjoy an intelli.tours Discovery Walk of the historic Spanish colonial center of Oaxaca and its markets.

After lunch is a special guided tour of the pre-Columbian archaeological site and pyramids of Monte Alban.

Tonight we will dine at Los Danzantes, one of Oaxaca’s most chic eateries. Makes sure to order a dish with the Mexican herb hoja santa!

Day 3Rug weaving, Yarn Dyeing, and Painting

Today we will travel just outside of Oaxaca to the Zapotec village of Teotitlán del Valle where you will have the honor of spending the day and lunching with the master rug weaver, sculptor, and painter Pantaleón Ruiz in his incredible studio.

During the day you will have the opportunity to:

• Learn how natural dyes are made to give Zapotec rugs their vibrant colors.
• Enjoy a painting class directed by Sr. Pantaleón.
• See (and if you wish purchase) his unique art, weavings, and amazing rug designs.

This is truly a unique experience that will thrill you and inspire your creativity.

Dinner tonight is at Expedio Tradición, a beautifully designed space with delectable small plates and fantastic cocktails. Don’t miss their Oaxacan craft beers!

Day 4Cooking with Reyna Mendoza

Today we return to the Zapotec village of Teotitlán del Valle for a truly unforgettable day where we will learn the secrets of making a traditional Oaxacan mole sauce at the picturesque outdoor kitchen and dining area of Reyna Mendoza, a critically acclaimed master chef of Mexican cuisine.

This incredible day includes:

• Welcome Oaxacan hot chocolate drink and a pan dulce in Señora Medoza’s charming outdoor kitchen.
• Morning walking tour of the Teotitlán market to purchase fresh, local ingredients.
• Hands-on cooking experience from appetizers to main dishes and dessert.
• Sit-down lunch of the food you have helped prepared, accompanied by fresh juices, beers, and mezcal.
• Recipes of the day’s dishes in English for you to re-create at home.

You will return to Oaxaca in the mid-afternoon to enjoy the elegant tranquility of the hotel and to discover the secrets of the charming streets, shops, and people of the city.

Tonight we will dine at Restaurante Catedral, a stately Spanish colonial dining room specializing in classic Oaxacan dishes.

Day 5Temples, Pottery, and Mezcal

Today we continue our adventures in the fascinating communities around Oaxaca. On this day of discovery and exploration, we will visit:

• The San Jerónimo Tlacochahuaya Church, dating from the 16th century, with a stunning colonial-era pipe organ.
• San Marcos Tlapazola, a Zapotec village famous for its incredible red clay pottery.
• A mezcal production facility, which offers tastings of all the varieties of this famous Oaxacan spirit.

We return to the hotel with plenty of time for to you sightsee, relax, or take a dip in the lovely pool at the hotel before dinner.

Tonight we will dine at Pitona, an elegantly rustic Oaxacan restaurant led by chef José Manual Baños, who worked at the famous El Bulli in Spain.

Day 6Relax, Savor, and Enjoy

Today is a day to sleep in, relax by the pool, and explore Oaxaca. Visit the many art museums in the the historic center, the textile museum, or sip a cocktail on the city’s charming central plaza — El Zócalo. Your intelli.tours Intelligence Officer and additional staff will be on hand to provide suggestions or assistance to any special spots or activities you may wish to attend.

Tonight we will attend, in the magnificent 16th-century former chapel of the Quinta Real hotel, a Guelaguetza, a celebration of Oaxacan indigenous folk dance. Including a lavish buffet, this is a unique spectacle not to be missed!

Day 7Waterfalls and History

Today we venture out from Oaxaca along a scenic route to one of the region’s most awe-inspiring natural features — Hierve el Agua, a “petrified” waterfall, as it often called. It is a photographic wonderful opportunity.

From Hierve el Agua we will continue on to Mitla, the most important of the archeological sites of the Zapotec, dating back over 2,500 years, which features striking mosaics.

Once again, we will have you back in Oaxaca in plenty of time to relax and enjoy your spectacular hotel.

Tonight we will dine at El Destilado, the brainchild of three young guys from the U.S., who offer a contemporary take on Oaxacan cuisine, with a nine-course tasting menu and samplings of mezcal.

Day 8Frida, Fantasies, and Pottery

Today we’ll get an early start to have breakfast with “Frida Kahlo” in her restaurant in the fascinating market of Ocotlán de Morelos. (OK, it’s not the real Frida, but the owner-cook of La Cocina de Frida dresses and looks amazingly like the real thing!)

While in Ocotlán you will have the opportunity to the see largest museum dedicated to the works of the famous Zapotec artist Rodolfo Morales. His incorporation of magical realism into his paintings is amazing and visually delightful.

From Ocotlán, we’ll pop over to the village of San Antonino Castillo Velasco and see how Mexican embroidery is done. It’s a fascinating and intricate process that yields beautiful results.

We will then visit San Martín Tilcajete, a village dedicated to the production of alebrijes — the brightly colored Mexican folk art sculptures of fantastical and mythical creatures. You will even get a chance to paint one of your own.

Our day will end with the most famous of the Oaxacan pottery arts — Oaxaca black pottery (barro negro), one of the best-known and most iconic pottery in Oaxaca — and in all of Mexico.

Tonight we have our farewell dinner at Casa Oaxaca, among the most elegant and famous eateries in Oaxaca, which features a rooftop terrace overlooking the majestic Santo Domingo church. You’ll enjoy inventive and delicious dishes featuring fresh, local ingredients.

Day 9Adiós Oaxaca

Today your chauffeur will transfer you the airport for your journey home.

Depending on the time of your flight, we invite you to enjoy breakfast in the hotel.
